Our Classes

Lake Success Jewish Center has implemented a new and innovative Hebrew School Program for the 2008-9 school year. Through our approach, we recognize the challenges of two parent working families; as well as the need for a program, which is serious yet flexible and family education oriented.

Mechina:
Our school program begins at age 5. Children attend our Thurs afternoon Mechina Class. From an early age we introduce Hebrew letters, Jewish holidays, Hebrew songs and Jewish culture. We provide more than one Mechina educator to enable older students to learn at a more advanced level.

Aleph: For students beginning their more 'formal' Jewish education in the we have designed a class without walls'. During weekly Thursday class, we will introduce a variety of themes ranging from Tsedakah and Social Action to Intergenerational Stories and Holidays. With each theme, students will participate in social action activities in order to transform learning into doing.

We will also devote class time to tsedakah projects, Shabbat observance, Hebrew blessings and prayers. Our study of Hebrew will provide students with a more spiritual and emotional connection to the language. The curriculum will include a monthly Shabbat Program for families, each program tailored to families and conducted in a warm, relaxing environment. The curriculum will also include a monthly 'Shabbat L'Mishpacha ' activity for the entire family. Our Shabbat and Sunday schedule will enable families to best experience Judaism at home as well as in the synagogue.

Bet: We introduce torah study, holidays and mitzvot on a more advanced level. They will not only read the stories, but be the stories. Families will be invited to share in the learning of important Jewish values.

Gimmel: Our 10-11 yr old students will continue their twice a week study of Jewish Holidays, Prayer, Values, Bible and basic Jewish subjects.

High School: Our 12 and over students will participate in a new, once per week class to explore serious teenage issues. Because of new dynamics which affect so many families with children the innovative approach to Hebrew School will benefit both parents and students. We hope to create a learning environment which will enable students to connect learning with action. The new approach will help shift the educational focus from student to family.

It is our hope that learning at the Lake Success Jewish Center will truly be a family affair!

Special Programs

Shabbat l'Mishpachah  We will share a Shabbat program once a month. This will include Friday night dinners, Saturday morning family service or twilight Havdalah experiences. Each activity is tailored to our families. You attend and we bring the spirit and enthusiasm.

Sunday B’Yahad/Sundays Together Our unique Sunday family programs will help provide you with the tools to celebrate Jewish festivals at home. For each program we will introduce food, music, dance, discussion and art. Sunday programs will also include mitzvah activities and trips to places of Jewish Year During the course of the year we invite special guests to spend time with us. For example: A Torah scribe to show us how to write a Torah; or an educator from the Holocaust and Tolerance Center to speak about bullying. We visit a matzah factory for Passover and honor our children during special services throughout the year.

Other Specials  During the year we invite guests to spend time with us. For example: a torah scribe, an educator from the Holocaust and Tolerance Center. For the holidays we  visit a Matzah factory for Passover, share a community-wide Hanukah Party, and on Purim we celebrate with a memorable family meal, complete with unique and fun Purim games.
